SITA Division, Automaker Teaming Up to Handle ELV Recycling

Joint venture will invest around $150 million over next five years on project.

Suez Environnement and the auto manufacturer Renault are joining together to develop effective end of life vehicle recycling in France. The two companies are forming an equally owned joint venture to speed up the development of ELV treatment in France.

To assist in the development, the joint venture would take control of Indra Investissement SAS, which has been involved in dismantling vehicles for more than 20 years. The goal of the program is to reach a recovery rate of 95 percent of all vehicles by 2015. The investment in the joint venture is expected to be around 100 million euros (US$150 million) spent over the next five years.

SITA is already heavily involved in the ELV sector, and has been involved with INDRA since 1999. To grow its recycling business SITA founded a new division, called SITA Recyclage, which was targeted with further development of the recycling side of the business. Since its inception this division has produced around 2.6 million metric tons of recyclable material, and has included the handling of around 270,000 metric tons of metals, 100,000 metric tons of plastic; and 90,000 metric tons of tires and other rubber products.

Indra operates throughout France, and has a network of around 200 certified vehicle dismantling businesses in the country.
