According to the Sioux City (Iowa) Journal, the Sioux City Council has scheduled a meeting for Monday, July 25, 2016, to discuss the costs of amending its single-stream curbside recycling program.
In June 2016, the city’s recycler, Van’s Sanitation and Recycling, Le Mars, Iowa, informed the council it will no longer acccept glass recyclables at its facility because of contamination and price concerns. Melissa Campbell, the city’s environmental services analyst, told the Journal she plans to present four possible amendments to the program at the council meeting.
“We’ll weigh the environmental and the financial impact,” Campbell said. “Some of the options have larger upfront costs, and some of them have long-term costs.”
The Environmental Advisory Board (EAB) recommended the installation of glass recycling drop-off locations throughout the city. Ripple Glass, Kansas City, Missouri, has offered to transport the glass recyclables deposited at no cost, the article says.
Another option would be to pick up glass in separate curbside bins, according to Campbell, though the EAB said this would increase emissions and transportation costs. The city council also could remove glass from the recycling program altogether. The remaining option would be to sign a partnership with another recycler.
