The Sims Group announced plans to build a second refrigerator recycling plant in the UK in a $5 million move aimed at maintaining its leadership in this sector.
The white goods recycling facility is expected to open by the middle of this year. The decision follows the company’s announcement that it sold its southern California operations to a Japanese owned firm that operates Pacific Coast Recycling.
According to Jeremy Sutcliffe, Sims’ managing director, "We have now got the confidence that we have got sufficient volumes coming through the system to justify a second plant."
The company’s first refrigerator recycling facility was opened in Wales last year, and reached its targeted capacity level early this year.
"I think we are probably going to see that pentane fridges, which replaced the CFC fridges and also have hydrocarbons in them, may also be required to be recycled," he added.Latest from Recycling Today
