Sims Group Opens Tire Recycling Facility in UK

Sims' UK-based operation look to strengthen its coverage as ELV issues near.

Last month the Sims Group commissioned a tire recycling plant that aims to shred tires to granule size. The plant under development by Sims Group will be able to process around 35,000 metric tons of tires a year. The finished product will be clean SBR granulate in a range of sizes. The cost of the tire recycling facility is around 5 million pounds.

According to Graham Davy, managing director for Sims Recycling Solutions, the company “is investing heavily in a network of reception centers to increase the recycling of ELV (end of life vehicle) tires arising from our own, partner and other authorized treatment facilities.

The move to build a tire recycling facility in the UK follows the decision by legislation that prohibits the disposal of tires in landfills. Adding to the situation, the ELV legislation, which became law late last year, calls for higher recycling and recovery rates for vehicles in the UK. For 2006, the recycling rate is to be 85 percent in 2006 where 5 percent can be through energy recovery.
