The Sims Group has opened a dedicated e-waste demanufacturing facility in Hayward, Calif. The 30,000 square feet facility will enable Sims to handle increasing volumes of e-waste materials.
Along with collecting and processing metal, plastic and CRT glass, Sims will provide equipment and component asset-management, together with guaranteed data destruction.
As well as serving its own corporate and local and state government customers, Sims has signed an agreement with the Recycle America Alliance to provide demanufacturing services for northern and central California
Scott Miller, manager of Environmental & Legal Affairs for Sims Group North America, said “our relationship with Recycle America Alliance provides us with an immediate and reliable source of material for the plant, and we are pleased to be working with them.” “We will also be leveraging the commodity marketing services of both companies to ensure sustainable end markets.”
"This is a big step forward in building our California electronics recycling infrastructure for the ever growing volumes of TVs, monitors and other e-scrap,” said Kevin McCarthy, director of Electronics Recycling for Waste Management, Inc., majority owner of Recycle America Alliance. “Our agreement with Sims Group USA leverages the resources of two premier companies with substantial recycling assets.”
Sims Group already operates seven recycling sites in California handling a wide range of metal, plastic and glass materials. Other North American facilities include sites in Virginia, Illinois and British Columbia, Canada.
Jeremy Sutcliffe, Sims’ CEO, noted that concluded that “Sims Group’s UK division has recently invested in multi-million dollar projects including refrigerator recycling, electronic recycling and tire recycling ahead of impending European legislation. This U.S. investment continues the strategy of offering multiple recycling solutions to the corporate and government business sectors”.
RAA processes electronics collected at more than 70 recycling or disposal facilities nationwide. It has four processing facilities in Phoenix, Houston, Minneapolis and Kernersville, N.C. It operates a nonferrous scrap metal facility in Long Branch, N.J., and has service contracts with ElectroniCycle, Gardner, MA; E-Recycling of southern California, Paramount, Calif.; and Quicksilver Recycling Services, Tampa, Fla.
