Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group Inc. has announced that it has been recognized for having the" Most Innovative Recycling Program? in a national competition sponsored by Environmental Protection Agency and International Council Shopping Centers (ICSC).
Simon’s honor was part of 2004 America’s Marketplace Recycles! Awards, which recognizes ICSC members' outstanding efforts achievements to conserve resources, recycle and purchase recycled content products at shopping centers across the country. Simon's electronics recycling events held at several malls across the United States during the first two weekends of October 2004 secured the award for the company. Thirty-one tons of material, including desktop PCs, laptops, monitors, printers, keyboards, televisions and peripheral devices, were collected. Simon shopping malls in Atlanta, Austin, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis and Seattle held electronics collection events.
This is the inaugural year for the America’s Marketplace Recycles! Awards. Winners will be honored at a Washington, D.C., ceremony this summer.
“The eCycling events were terrific, and we appreciate being recognized,” Dennis Cavanagh, executive vice president of the Simon Business Network, says. Cavanagh says the eCycling effort was a joint effort between Simon and Recycle America Alliance, a subsidiary of Houston-based Waste Management.
The EPA provided technical assistance and guidance to the ICSC through its Resource Conservation Challenge program. Tom Dunne, EPA deputy assistant administrator, says, “We believe improvements in recycling at America’s shopping centers will have a significant impact. More importantly, shopping centers are a crucial venue to help educate our nation’s consumers of the value of recycling.”
