Shredding Companies Hosting Free Shredding Days

Shredding companies link up with local media to promote special shredding day.

As concerns over identity theft continues, a number of local media outlets have been announcing one-day shredding days. During these widely publicized events a television station or other media center lines up a shredding company to provide free shredding services to residents.

Over the next several weeks two shredding programs, in two different regions of the country, have been announced.

In the Rogers/Fort Smith, Arkansas area, a local news station, Home Town Channel, and ShredMax, a local mobile shredding company, will be offering free shredding for residents on May 21. This is the second year for the once a year service.

Richard McMullen, owner of ShredMax, said the program is an excellent way for his company to receive greater visibility. “We have been getting feedback since we did our first shredding program last year,” McMullen says.

The shredding day will be held in both cities at visible locations.

The one-day event is limited to residentially generated personal documents. The shredding company will not be accepting documents from commercial businesses.

The success of the program has been great enough that McMullen says his company is considering hosting the program twice a year.

In the South Bend, Indiana, area, News Center 16, a local NBC affiliate, will be partnering with Shred-It, the large shredding franchise company, to offer a free shredding service May 14. This will be the first time News Center 16 has hosted a shredding day. It is being called the Great Shred Event.

The shredding service is limited to household documents, and the company will shred a maximum of 50 pounds per household.
