Able UK’s Graythorp yard in Haretlepool, UK, has applied for permission from the UK’s Environment Agency to discharge treated sewage, treated effluent and site drainage from two outfalls into the River Tees. A fifth application to discharge surface water from the site already has been made.
If granted, all of the discharges will be monitored by the Environment Agency to ensure the safety of the River Tees.
Bob Pailor, Environment Manager for the Environment Agency said: "These latest applications are part of a series of permissions which Able UK needs if it is to operate its Graythorp facility.
"As always our role is to ensure that people’s health and that of our environment is safeguarded, and this is what we will be assessing the applications against."
A consultation on the applications will run until this December.
