Shingle Forum Nearing

Event looks at use of shingles as paving material.

The Second Asphalt Shingles Recycling Forum, to take place in Bloomington, Minn., is less than three weeks away. The two-day event takes place Sunday, April 13 and Monday, April 14.

Several groups and agencies have helped organize and fund the forum, including Minnesota’s Department of Transportation (DOT); Minnesota’s Office of Environmental Assistance; the Construction Materials Recycling Association (CMRA), Lisle, Ill.; U.S. EPA Region 5, Chicago; the Recycled Materials Resource Center at the University of New Hampshire; and the University of Minnesota, Bloomington.

The sponsoring agencies say the forum will be an ideal educational venue for city and county engineers, solid waste administrators, paving contractors and asphalt producers, waste shingle generators such as roofing contractors, equipment vendors and representatives from other state agencies, including departments of transportation.

Four panel discussions will take a look at different aspects of shingle recycling, including paving contractor experiences using shingles, asbestos sampling and barriers facing the use of tear-off shingles.

In addition to the agencies involved in the event, shingles makers such as Owens Corning, GAF Materials Corp. and CertainTeed Corp. are supporting the forum.
