Severstal North America has announced that it is extending the downtime through the first quarter of 2011 its primary steel operations at its Sparrows Point steel mill in Baltimore County, Md.
The company cited continued economic problems in the domestic steel industry, which has had a negative impact on its customer orders, as a key reason for the decision to extend the idling time for the mill.
While primary and hot mill operations will remain idled, and other Severstal mills will work reduced schedules, Severstal North America says that its tin mill will continue to operate. In a release, Severstal North America says that its Sparrows Point mill will continue to provide product to a limited number of its cold roll and coated products customers.
