Seven Tons of Scrap Computers Collected

Two-day event in New England draws steady crowds.

More than 7 tons of obsolete electronic scrap was collected at a two-day event held at a Concord, N.H., shopping mall.

The Northeast Recycling Council, Brattleboro, Vt., coordinated the event with help from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and the City of Concord. Other sponsors included Panasonic, Sharp, JVC, Philips, Circuit City Steeplegate Mall, Zero Waste, Bagel Works of Concord, and Wheelabrator Industries.

During the two days of the event, which was funded by a grant from the Electronics Industry Alliance, Arlington, Va., 121 cars dropped off more than 7 tons of electronics for recycling. An average of 127 pounds per vehicle filled up a 52-foot trailer.

Items accepted included computers and monitors, televisions, copiers, cell phones and “anything else with a cord.” Electronicycle, Gardner, Mass., took delivery of the materials collected.

The event was publicized via newspaper, radio, in Concord water bills and on posters in the Steeplegate Mall. It was scheduled to offer both weekday and weekend hours and was located in an accessible parking lot, notes NERC director Lynn Rubinstein.
