Security Engineered Machinery (SEM), Westboro, Mass., has introduced the Jackhammer, a shredder designed to destroy computer hard drives, optical media and other electronic devices, such as cell phones, BlackBerries and memory sticks.
The shredder features an in-feed opening of 10.75 inches by 2.5 inches and specially designed sawtooth cutters designed to reduce devices to 1.5-inch shreds. The Jackhammer’s five horsepower motor and high-torque mechanism can chew up more than 20 hard drives per minute with virtually no noise or vibration, according to SEM. A 208-/230-/460-volt outlet is required.
The unit, which measures 54 inches by 50 inches by 89 inches, includes a discharge conveyor and is mounted on casters for mobility. A key is required to start the unit, so only authorized personnel can use it. It also includes an emergency stop button that halts operation.
