Security Engineered Machinery (SEM), Westborough, Massachusetts, says its new EMP1000-HS electromagnetic degausser “makes sanitizing magnetic media—including hard drives or magnetic tapes containing classified information—fast, safe and easy.”
SEM also says the EMP1000-HS has been evaluated by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) and is listed on its Degausser Evaluated Products List. Producing a magnetic force of 2.0 tesla (20,000 gauss), the capacitive discharge pulse of the EMP1000-HS “sanitizes today’s high-density (high coercivity) PMR and LMR hard disk drives with coercivity ratings of up to 5,000 oersteds and data tapes with nominal coercivity ratings of up to 2,800 oersteds,” SEM says.
The EMP1000-HS is billed by SEM as the first NSA-listed degausser to feature a high-resolution LCD touch screen with multicolored icons for operator control and feedback. It detects the strength of the magnetic field during operation and then displays it to confirm that the media have been fully degaussed, according to SEM. The device’s 25-second cycle time is the fastest of any NSA-listed degausser, the company adds.
The EMP1000-HS is equipped with Auto-Sync, a feature that automatically identifies and “syncs” to the outlet’s voltage (110 or 220 volts at 50-60 hertz AC). An onboard Smart Logic processor allows for a variety of checks and comparison features designed to ensure the electrical systems and functions run properly.
The unit is designed to be compact at 11.4 inches wide by 19 inches deep and 23 inches high. According to SEM, the EMP1000-HS fits on standard desks and tables. It also can be paired with an NSA-listed SEM Model 0101 crusher to comply with “degauss and destroy” guidelines for the sanitization of classified magnetic media.
SEM bills itself as an ISO 14001-registered direct supplier of data destruction equipment. It also operates what it calls the largest secure destruction facility in the northeastern U.S., adjacent to its headquarters in Westborough.
