SEM Introduces New Degausser

Product meets Department of Defense specifications.

Security Engineered Machinery is introducing the Model EMP001 Eliminator Hard Drive and Magnetic Tape Degausser, its most recent product for degaussing hard drives.

The electromagnetic-pulse degausser permanently erases data from computer hard drives, data tapes, and other magnetic media. The EMP001 is on the U.S. National Security Agency's Evaluated Products List, complies with Department of Defense requirements for destroying classified information on magnetic media, and exceeds the requirements of many national and international legislative mandates (FACTA, HIPAA, GLB, DPA, etc.) for the destruction of confidential/sensitive data.

The EMP001, with effective field strength of up to 40,000 gauss, erases data from longitudinal magnetic recorded and perpendicular magnetic recorded hard disk drives with up to 3 terabytes of storage and nominal coercivity ratings of up to 5,000 Oersteds. It erases data tapes with nominal coercivity ratings of up to 2,800 Oersteds.

The EMP001 is easily operated on a tabletop. Hard drives or other magnetic media (up to 1" x 4" x 6") are inserted in a slot in the top of the compact (28" x 10" x 19.5") unit, the start button is pushed, and the fully degaussed items are ejected at the bottom of the chamber approximately 60 seconds later. Power requirements are 8 amps at 120 volts or 4 amps at 240 volts.

SEM is ISO 14001 registered. The company is a large direct supplier of data-destruction equipment. The company also claims that it is the largest secure destruction facility in the Northeast, adjacent to its headquarters in Westboro, Mass.
