SDI Upgrades Shredder at its Virginia Subsidiary

Equipment maker U.S. Shredder selected to upgrade plant at Shredded Products in Virginia.

The U.S. Shredder and Castings Group, Brookhaven, Miss., has been selected by Shredded Products LLC to upgrade its current shredder system located in Rocky Mount, Va. Shredded Products is a subsidiary of steelmaker Steel Dynamics Inc.

The project will be completed in two phases according to U.S. Shredder President Bill Tigner. In Phase One, a stand-alone nonferrous system will be installed first, consisting of three Steinert eddy current systems and an ISS (induction sorting) system.

Shredded Products will continue to use its existing system while Phase Two components are being manufactured, according to Tigner.

That second phase will upgrade the shredder plant with WEG 4,000-hp motor, a U.S. Shredder control and management system, a water injection system, a new control housing with operator station, and a new ferrous downstream system. Then the ferrous downstream system will be connected to the nonferrous system, all of which operate inside a newly erected building.

“A requirement of the system was to manufacture and install the system with minimal downtime of the shredder,” says Tigner. “Our engineers and suppliers worked closely with Shredded Products personnel to accomplish this plan.”

The U.S. Shredder and Castings Group offers scrap shredding systems, scrap shears, balers and loggers, as well shredder castings, service and consulting to the North and Central American scrap industry.
