Fort Wayne, Indiana-based Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) has reportedly indicated to economic development officials in Kentucky that it will restart the former Kentucky Electric Steel rolling mill near Ashland, Kentucky, in November. SDI acquired assets that included the rolling mill and announced its intention to link the operation to its electric arc furnace (EAF) mini-mill in Huntington, West Virginia, in September.
According to an online news report from the Ashland-based Daily Independent, the mill was idled by its previous owner in March 2018, but SDI has indicated to officials in Boyd County, Kentucky, that it will be reopening the plant.
The rolling mill to be restarted has an annual capacity of 250,000 tons.
