The San Luis Obispo County, Calif., Planning Commission approved a request made by Macoy Resources and Adams Steel for a conditional use permit to allow a scrap recycling facility and transfer yard to be built in the county.
The meeting, held Nov. 30, voted 3-0 in favor of the project, which will include an 1,800-square foot office trailer; certified scale; hazardous waste materials storage; use of an existing 2,700-square foot metal building for receiving non-ferrous metal; non-ferrous hardware storage and processing; storage of unprocessed automobiles; car crusher and storage of crushed cars; storage of ferrous scrap piles; a 8,000-gallon diesel storage tank; impounded vehicle storage; storage of used vehicle parts, and; storage of roll-off boxes and transport trucks.
The project is proposed on a 3.78-acre parcel and will result in the disturbance of the entire parcel. The proposed project is within the Commercial Service land use category
The Environmental Coordinator, after completion of the initial study, found that there is no substantial evidence that the project may have a significant effect on the environment, and the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report is not necessary.
County planners did request that the owners of the scrap yard include some form of screening for the facility.
