Monroe Recycling LLC, a part of Sturgis Iron & Metal, announced that it would be opening a scrap facility at the Port of Monroe, Monroe, Mich. The official announcement was made Oct. 26.
The company hopes to have partial operation of the facility take by the first half of next year, with the facility fully operational by the the end of next year.
The new scrap yard will cover around 15 acres, and is expected to handle between 4,000-5,000 tons of scrap metal a month from both industrial and street traffic. The company signed a 50-year lease on the property, which is located in a heavy industry zoned area of Monroe. In addition to the 15 acres, the company also has purchased an additional three acres that was adjacent to the land.
The company expects to spend around $3 million to develop the yard, and will at least include a baler and a crane to perform processing. The company also is expected to invest money to bring in a rail spur onto the property to give the company the flexibility to bring in material via rail as well as truck. While there is rail close to the property, the scrap company will invest to have the spur come all the way to the yard.
The port sits right on the River Raisin, which feeds into Lake Erie. The location will allow the company to take advantage of both water and rail access for improvement shipment of material.
According to local published reports Monroe Recycling also will invest in concrete and asphalt to strengthen the storage of metals on the site.
Sturgis owns and operates more than six scrap recycling facilities, and has a significant presence in the Indiana/Michigan area.
