Scrap prices may be motivating someone to steal the barbecue grill lids away from homeowners in a Chicago suburb.
According to a Chicago Sun-Times report, more than a dozen grill lids have been reported stolen in the Chicago suburb of Skokie, Ill. Police fear other thefts may have not yet been reported, as most residents are not grilling in early March.
Backyard barbecue grills are commonly made from cast aluminum (some are made from cast iron), which—when several lids are accumulated—can translate into several dollars of scale value in the current scrap climate.
The Sun-Times report notes that 15 cases of the thefts have been documented by Skokie police, who are asking residents to keep their eyes open for backyard intruders.
One Chicago area barbecue equipment store owner notes that when he places old grills in the trash, scavengers usually stop by to recover the lids.
Although the thieves may only get a couple of dollars per lid, the replacement cost to residents will be much higher.Latest from Recycling Today
