Scrap Dealer Receives ISO Certification

Midwestern scrap processor achieves ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification.

An Indiana-based scrap metal processing company recently received ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification. Newco Metals Inc., Pendleton, Ind., received the award less than 30 days ago.

Steve Craver, vice president, sales and marketing, said the nonferrous processor opted to strive to receive the certification to demonstrate to its customers that Newco is an environmentally safe operation. Additionally, by receiving the two ISO certifications, the company has been able to document all its operations.

The company was able to go from implementation to certification in eight months; typically, a company seeking ISO certification may take between 18-24 months to receive the certification.

The company attributes the rapid completion of the tests and certification to the company already being well on their way to proper operations before the testing procedure even began.

One big advantage to receiving the ISO certification is that many manufacturers, especially in the automotive industry, are requiring their suppliers to be ISO certified.

ISO 9001 is geared toward ensuring a company meeting quality operational standards, while ISO 14001 focuses on environmental standards. According to Newco, 14001 is the only environmental standard right now available.

Achieving ISO 14001 certification requires a company meet all local, state and federal regulations, including those from the EPA and OSHA.
