OmniSource has agreed to pay a civil fine of $10,500 and reduce dust emissions down at its scrap metal processing facility in Toledo, Ohio. The company said it will keep the paved roadways and parking areas clean and its vehicles from carrying dirt onto public roads.
The company was cited a number of times between late 2003 and early this year by the Toledo Division of Environmental Services.
The U.S. EPA has set a national air quality standard for six common pollutants, including particulate matter. Road dust is one source of particulate matter. The settlement requires the company to sweep the roads on its property, wash tires, grade surface areas and use dust suppressants to maintain compliance with regulations.
Of the penalty, $8,400 will benefit the Ohio Environmental Education Fund and Ohio EPA air pollution control programs. The remaining $2,100 will be paid to Ohio EPA's Clean Diesel School Bus Fund.
