Scotia Recycling Nears Acquisition

Canadian company looks to grow with impending acquisition.

Scotia Recycling Ltd., a 26-year old paper recycling operation headquartered in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, is expected to complete the acquisition of Nova Recycling, a smaller recycling operation located in Newfoundland. The company hopes the deal will be complete by the end of this week.

Scotia is a part of the Scotia Investment Group, is owned by a company with a host of other business operations in Canada, including paper mill operations. The company is one of the largest multi-stream recyclers in the eastern part of Canada. The company has four baling facilities in the province. In addition to paper, the company also handles some plastics.

According to Darren Welner, Scotia’s sales and marketing supervisor, much of the material collected and processed by Scotia is shipped to paper mills also owned by the Scotia Investment Group, including Minas Pulp. Along with supplying Scotia's recovered fiber consuming operations, Scotia markets its processed paper stock throughout the Atlantic Canadian area, as well as the New England area of the United States.

The purchase will include the cardboard and plastic bottle bailing equipment of Nova's five Newfoundland facilities, as well as grinding and pelletizing equipment at Nova's Stephenville, NF plant.

Along with these operations, Nova handles the beverage container program for the province of Newfoundland. Welner says that Nova already has end markets for the glass containers collected through the program. In addition to glass, the beverage program includes aseptic drink containers, which contain valuable pulpable material.
