Six South Carolina businesses and two hospitality facilities were honored for outstanding waste reduction and recycling programs at the second annual S.C. Smart Business Recycling Program awards ceremony.
“Businesses generate between 35 to 45 percent of the nation’s waste stream,” says Earl Hunter, commissioner for South Carolina’s Department of Health and Environmental Control. “Therefore, businesses play an important role in reducing the impact of wastes on the environment. By implementing simple waste reduction and recycling practices, businesses help protect our environment by conserving natural resources, reducing pollution and saving energy.”
The six businesses recognized are the following: Bausch & Lomb, Eaton Corp., EuroKera, two Michelin facilities and Shaw Industries. Bausch & Lomb is a repeat winner.
Special recognition was given to Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp. for reaching its zero waste to landfill goal three months ahead of schedule.
The two hospitality suites recognized are High Cotton restaurant and Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Both businesses were recognized for incorporating environmental stewardship and sustainability within their daily practices including that recycling be made available to guests and staff throughout their facilities.
