San Diego is expanding the types of plastics accepted in the city's curbside recycling program to include all bottles covered by the California Redemption Value program.
These include bottles that contained soda, water, juice, sports drinks, iced tea and coffee drinks. The bottles are marked "CRV."
Until now, the city accepted only narrow-necked plastic bottles marked No. 1 or 2.
The change was mandated by a directive from the state Department of Conservation.
The increase in the types of plastics containers runs counter to the nationwide trend toward a reduction in the amount of plastics being collected for recycling.
