The second phase of the city of San Diego’s recycling ordinance, which was approved by the City Council late last year, went into effect Feb. 18. The ordinance requires the recycling of plastic and glass bottles and jars, paper, newspaper, metal containers and cardboard.
The first phase of the program went into effect the first of this year, and included residents of the city who have a blue recycling cart would be required to separate out the above recyclables fro the solid waste.
In the second phase of the program single family are serviced by private, franchise haulers are required to participate in the curbside program. These residences are required to contact their homeowner’s association franchise hauler or a recycler to set up the program for their household.
In addition to single family houses, all apartment and condominium complexes with 100 residential units or more are required to take part in the recycling program.
Other facilities that need to comply with the recycling ordinance include commercial facilities that are 20,000 square feet or more, and at special events that require a city permit.
