The City Council of Salt Lake City will hold a hearing in mid-November 2015 to receive feedback on its plan to broaden its city recycling program to include apartment buildings, condominiums and some businesses.
According to an online article from the Deseret News, the city council has been considering the expansion for several years and anticipates voting on it in December.
A council representative quoted by the Deseret News says elected officials have heard from constituents who tell them “it doesn't make sense that we provide recycling for single-family homes, but not for the densest part of our city.”
The article says Salt Lake City’s current municipal solid waste landfill diversion rate stands at 40 percent, but the rate may be as low as 10 to15 percent at multifamily units and at commercial buildings.
