Salam Sharif, chairman of United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Sharif Group and president of the Bureau of Middle East Recycling, gave a presentation at the 2017 International Secondary Lead Conference (ISLC) in mid-September in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Sharif says the ISLC “is the world’s leading secondary lead conference” and the event in Kuala Lumpur brought together some 400 producers, recyclers, traders and end users of lead from around the world. At the ISLC, delegates discussed the state of the market, with Sharif addressing recent developments in lead battery recycling.
Lead-acid battery recycling brings economic, environmental and social benefits, said Sharif, who urged attendees to maintain their commitment to the sustainable and “green” activity.
Earlier in September, Sharif also represented the UAE-based BMR at the World Non Ferrous Conference & Awards (WNFA) event at the Hyatt Regency Mumbai in India. Also present at that event was Ranjit Baxi, president of the Brussels-based Bureau of International Recycling (BIR).
Sharif says he and Baxi used their platform at the conference to provide “high publicity to our recycling industry and its essence in economic, social and environmental roles, highlighting the importance of the recycling industry and the [upcoming] Global Recycling Day.” The BIR and other organizations have selected March 18, 2018, as the first Global Recycling Day.
