SA Recycling, a scrap metal recycling company headquartered in Orange, Calif., is looking to open a small scrap recycling facility in Santa Maria, Calif., on the site of a former auto dismantling facility. The prospective location sits on less than 2 acres and will do only minimal processing, the company says. The proposed scrap yard is expected to target the local retail trade.
A spokesman for SA Recycling says the location, which includes a 10,000-square-foot building, will be limited to having a truck scale “and a couple of nonferrous scales on site.”
Presently, the company is involved in finalizing traffic and air studies.
SA Recycling says it expects to have the Santa Maria Planning Commission vote on a conditional use permit by the middle of April. The company first requested an application for the site in January 2012.
According to local press reports, local residents have opposed the new facility.
SA Recycling operates more than 50 locations in California, Arizona and Nevada. The spokesman says that if the company receives approval on the feeder yard it will undertake significant renovations of the facility, including a screening wall, setbacks and landscaping of the facility.
