York County, South Carolina is expected to start a program to shred tires collected in the county. The county is using grant money it has received to purchase a tire shredder, as well as modify a building to house the shredding operation.
The decision to build a tire shredder and facility to house it follows the approval by the York County Council that approved bids to purchase a $163,000 tire shredder and spend $16,000 to build the tire processing center.
The chipped tires will be sold for a variety of landscaping applications. According to local press reports the county spends around $20,000 a year to dispose of its collected tires. Chipping and selling the end product could bring in around $4,000 in revenue per year.
The program is expected to start the middle of next month.
