Ruth is New North Star President

Will lead Minnesota-based EAF steelmaking division of Cargill Inc.

Jon Ruth has been named president of the North Star Steel, the electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaking subsidiary of Cargill Inc., Minneapolis.

Ruth has worked at North Star Steel (NSS) since 1980, most recently serving as vice president/commercial. He replaces Jim Thompson, who will continue to serve as chairman of the NSS board.

Ruth holds a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s University of Minnesota and has completed the executive management program at the University of Michigan Business School. He has been involved in several industry trade groups, including the American Iron and Steel Institute and the Concrete Reinforcing Institute.

“We are delighted to have Jon at the helm as we navigate North Star Steel through a period of transition as continue to post robust, profitable results and maintain our customer commitments and focus,” says Thompson.

The company sold its former tube mill facilities in Youngstown, Ohio, and Houston to a European joint venture company in 2002, and also sold its Kingman, Ariz., mill to Nucor Corp., Charlotte, in March of this year.
