The equipment company RMG Technology has introduced the mPulse, a hand-held laser analyzer that has been designed to identify metals. In a release, RMG says the mPulse is a miniaturized version of the technique currently in use on the Mars Rover and presented in a rugged, battery powered, hand-held tool that can be used across the metals and recycling industries. The company notes that the Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has never been presented in a compact form before.
With the mPulse, users can perform a test on any material in slightly more than one second. The mPulse is calibrated for a wide range of metals, and there is no discrimination between heavy and light elements.
With the mPulse all metal types are analyzed using the same Auto-ID test program. Alloy name and chemical analysis is presented on a large sunlight-readable LCD. Other common user facilities can be found through the icon driven menus.
Both large and small sample pieces can be tested and sample preparation is not necessary, although the mPulse is a surface analyzer so the surface must be clean.
