Rising Fuel Costs Leads McCloskey to Update its 621 Trommels

Larger capacity hopper enables reduced loader running time.

McCloskey International Ltd., Peterborough, Ontario, has introduced an updated version of its high-volume 621 trommel.

According to McCloskey President Paschal McCloskey, rising diesel fuel costs were an important factor behind the upgrade. “Customers have been telling us they want to reduce running time on their loaders,” he reports. “One way to do that is to increase hopper capacity on the trommel. The big hopper lets you fill it once then let the trommel run, instead of making the loader operate continuously,” he says.

In addition to the larger hopper, the modified 621 trommel design features a wider feed conveyor and a wider stacking conveyor. At 6.5 cubic yards, the hopper is sized to match the typical processing speeds and capacities of the screening system, according to the company. The 42-inch-wide feed belt will minimize bridging, according to McCloskey, while a live head ensures that oversized material that cannot go through the hopper will shed away, avoiding the risk of jamming.

The 621 trommel has also been fitted with a larger diameter drum drive and high-density 110-pound drive wheels, allowing smoother rotation, the company says. High-torque and high-flow hydraulics have been introduced to help the 621 operate more efficiently and achieve higher throughput volumes. McCloskey also replaced the chain drive of the feed conveyor with a direct-drive system.

With the engineering changes to the standard 621 trommel complete, McCloskey developed a second version of the machine as the first “track ‘n’ tow” trommel. In additional to the usual wheeled undercarriage used for transporting the trommel, the track ‘n’ tow unit is fitted with retractable crawler tracks. The tracks can be lowered hydraulically, raising the wheels, to turn the trommel into a remote-operated mobile plant.

McCloskey International designs and makes innovative trommel screeners, vibrating screeners, stacking conveyors and picking stations. More information is available at www.mccloskeyinternational.com.
