Ripple Glass LLC, a Kansas City-based company started by Boulevard Brewing, a local brewer, is building a facility that will be able to process glass bottles collected through the city. The facility is expected to cost around $3.5 million, and will produce glass cullet.
In opting to build a processing plant, Ripple estimates that more than 100 million pounds of recycled glass are used every year in the city. However, there was a lack of processing space to take in the material.
Starting next month, Ripple will have dozens of collection sites scattered throughout the city.
The insulation company Owens Corning will purchase about 85 percent of glass recycled through the program, according to the Kansas City Business Journal.
The new crushing facility can process five tons of glass an hour and can be expanded to triple the capacity.
