RI Fines Recycler for Failing to Meet Goals

The Superior Court of Rhode Island fined Global Recycling for not meeting its quarterly cleanup goal, as well as failing to submit reports.

Global Recycling, an idled construction and demolition recycling facility located in Smithtown, RI, was fined $2,230 by the State Superior Court for failing to meet the predetermined level of 15,000 tons removed from the site by the end of the quarter.

According to a spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, the company missed by 223 tons the required level.

Along with the fine for failing to clean up the correct tonnage amount, the company was fined $1,000 for failing to submit ground and surface water testing over the past two quarters. Further, the company is being fined $250 per day, beginning Oct. 8, until it provides the test

The company, which was denied a permit to operate the facility, is required to have the cleanup completed by the end of this year.

Late last week, the judge in the case gave Global 30 days to pay fines totaling $2,230 -- for missing, by 223 tons, its quarterly waste-removal requirement of 15,000 tons -- and an additional $1,000 for not completing required ground- and surface-water testing during the last six months.

And the company will be fined $250 a day, starting tomorrow, until it provides the Rhode Island DEM with water test results, Vogel ruled.

Since Vogel's order, last December, to permanently close the recycling operation, Global has been breaking down 150,000 cubic yards of construction and demolition debris to be hauled to the Central Landfill, in Johnston.
