Residents in several neighborhoods in South and Southwest Philadelphia are fighting a company's plan to use a huge automobile shredder for tons of old tires and incinerator ash, too.
S-P-C Corp., a subsidiary of Camden Iron and Metal Inc., has asked the state's permission to add more materials to its shredding menu.
In response, 11 neighborhood and environmental organizations are pushing for the entire facility, located near the Platt Memorial Bridge, to be shut down. Opponents say the shredder has been cited several times this year by the city for air-pollution violations this year.
Barbara Capozzi is the president of the Packer Park Civic Association. She says the shredder is an eyesore. She says she doesn't know how it's been allowed to exist this long.
S-P-C spokeswoman Cynthia McKeown says the company would expand its materials under the plan, but not the facility itself. Associated Press
