Ford Motor Co. has petitioned the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to receive permits for two new cupola furnaces at its casting plant in Brookpark, Ohio, near Cleveland.
The two furnaces will apparently replace four existing cupola furnaces at the plant, which has been capable of casting both iron and aluminum engine parts.
The emissions control systems of the new furnaces will decrease emissions of particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and lead, but will increase the release of nitrogen oxides, according to the Ohio EPA.
The agency is seeking public comments regarding the installation through the month of May. If it grants an installation permit, that will allow Ford Motor Co. to operate its new equipment for up to one year. An operating permit will be required for the company to operate beyond one year.
