A plan to reopen an old sand and gravel pit for use as a construction and demolition debris landfill in Harford County, Md., is raising concerns among some members of the community, according to a report in the Baltimore Sun.
The Spencer site, a 65-acre former sand and gravel mine in Abingdon, Md., was closed in the early ‘90s, according to the report. Reopening it as a C&D landfill is part of Harford County’s proposed solid waste management plan, which also includes establishing three new recycling sites to handle the material.
Some Abingdon residents and county council members have voiced opposition to the plan, citing noise and increased traffic as potential problems in the area, which has grown significantly in population in the decade since the site was closed, according to the Baltimore Sun.
Under the proposed plan, White Marsh, Md.-based company Days Cove Reclamation Co. would take over the Spencer site.
