United Kingdom-based waste-to-product company Renewi plc has signed a 10-year contract to supply refuse derived fuel (RDF) to a facility in Amsterdam operated by Netherlands-based AEB.
According to the contract, Renewi will supply AEB with up to 1 million metric tons of RDF over the course of the contract, which will be produced mainly at Renewi’s East London operation. The RDF will be used to generate more than 5 percent of the 1 million MWh (megawatt hours) of electricity generated at the Amsterdam facility each year.
The contract provides “a secure off-take outlet for the remaining RDF produced from Renewi’s mechanical biological treatment (MBT) operations [by] its East London Waste Authority (ELWA) contract,” according to Renewi.
The contract expands on a current one-year agreement between Renewi’s U.K. operations and AEB. It will run to the end of 2027 with an option to extend after that period. It also includes flexibility for Renewi to provide RDF from any of its U.K. or Dutch facilities, allowing the company to capitalize on any fluctuations in RDF availability in its portfolio.
“This new cooperation with AEB results from the breadth of Renewi’s international footprint as a newly integrated business,” says James Priestley, Renewi’s managing director for the municipal division. (The company was created in 2017 by the merger of Shanks Group Plc and Van Gansewinkel Groep B.V.).
“We are making good progress with our recovery plan in the Municipal Division and securing this contract, in addition to the recent 20-year RDF contract at Ferrybridge [U.K.], is another important step forward,” says Priestley. “The new AEB contract provides Renewi with another long-term fuel outlet for our largest PFI contract, which had previously been exposed to market volatility. We look forward to delivering our high-quality fuel to AEB and helping to generate green energy and heat for homes and local businesses across Amsterdam.”
