Remondis receives approval to acquire recycling company

An independent regulatory authority has cleared the German company’s acquisition of Bördner group.

The Bundeskartellamt, the Bonn, Germany-based independent authority, has cleared the acquisition of the waste management and recycling company Bördner Group, Limburg, Germany, by Germany-based Remondis GmbH & Co. With the acquisition, Remondis will extend its network of locations of operations in more regions of Germanywhile strengthening its position in the collection of household and commercial waste in the greater Rhine-Main region of Germany.

Remondis, one of the largest recycling and waste management firms in the world, is part of the Rethmann Group. The company provides recycling, waste management and other services to 30 million people. Through its branches and associated companies, Remondis operates across four continents, including 24 European countries, China, India, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Australia.

Andreas Mundt, president of the Bundeskartellamt, says, “Although Remondis can expand its strong market position in the region, the merger did not fulfill the preconditions for a prohibition order. Our thorough examination of the markets affected has shown that even after the merger there will still be sufficient competitive pressure from other market participants in all business areas affected by the merger.”

The offer of Bördner Group comprises mainly the acquisition of various types of household waste on behalf of public sector waste disposal and dual systems. In addition, commercial waste and hazardous waste are collected, handled, stored and sorted for subsequent recycling.

Services offered by the Bördner Group include collecting different types of household waste on behalf of public waste management authorities and compliance schemes. The company also collects, handles, stores and sorts commercial and hazardous waste for recycling. Additionally, Bördner Grou operates a recovered fibre sorting plant.
