Waste wood from pallet packaging, civic amenity, construction and demolition sites will be given a new lease of life thanks to two new regional recycling projects part-funded by the Waste & Resources Action Programme.
West Bromwich Pallets Ltd in the West Midlands and Plevin & Sons Ltd in the North West have received over £106,000 and £395,000 respectively from WRAP’s Regional Market Development Fund.
The Regional Market Development Fund was launched last year and will provide up to £10million for regional and local projects in England that will secure the recycling of additional tonnage derived from priority waste streams, including wood.
Plevin & Sons Ltd are using the funding for the installation of new plant that will be able to process up to 40 metric tons of recycled wood per hour. Wood from local authority sites will be screened, cleaned and used to produce woodchip to exact specifications for the chipboard industry – allowing the company to become a market leader in this sector. The company is also planning to enter added value markets such as animal bedding, equestrian riding surfaces and garden mulches.
West Bromich Pallets Ltd is investing in a second production line and decontamination plant on a new 8-acre site for its wood fibre products: Cushionfall®, used for children’s playgrounds; Enviromulch® wood mulch for landscaping; Cushionride® equestrian surfacing product and Cushionbed® equestrian bedding material. Their aim is to increase the tonnage of wood waste reprocessed, create new product lines and create local jobs within the community. Once the site is fully operational, profits will be reinvested into the company to ensure the long-term future of wood reprocessing in the heart of the Midlands.
Mervyn Jones, WRAP’s special projects manager, said: “Studies have suggested that there are huge volumes of wood still being sent to landfill. We recognize that regional and local delivery of support to recycling businesses is an integral part of market development.
