Columbus-based Redemtech, an asset management services provider, has released Datasure Lock-IT 2.0, a security utility that locks the hard drives on IT assets to prevent unauthorized access during transit or storage. The utility works by encrypting system files.
“A significant number of security breaches occur as a result of lost or stolen computers,” Robert Houghton, president of Redemtech, says. “Lock-IT allows organizations to close a gap in their security program by enabling fast, on-site data locking on assets being decommissioned or redeployed.”
Lock-IT can be downloaded and installed by non-technical users in less than five minutes and takes 30 seconds to execute, according to Redemtech. It can also be configured as part of the system, providing on-demand locking security throughout an asset’s life span. Users can also configure numerous unlock options, including user-defined passwords and a corporate unlock key.
Lock-IT can boot from DOS, allowing data on defective drives to be secured until they can be transported to a facility for secured erasure, Redemtech says in a press release. The company also reports that a privacy-regulated customer was able to securely manage the replacement of more than 15,000 defective drives throughout the
Version 2.0 provides users with more options for unlocking secured assets, more administrative control and support for data security reporting.
Lock-IT works on any Windows-based computer, including desktops and servers. Once the initial options are configured, the software can be downloaded from the Redemtech Web site and distributed to end users through the Internet, e-mail, floppy disk, CD, USB drive, system image or network command.
Redemtech’s end-to-end data security process includes on-site data lock or erasure, chain-of-custody controls, automated data destruction and verification and security repository. Lock-IT integrates with Retrac, Redemtech’s Web-based business process automation system, for verification reporting through Redemtech’s Certified Data Security Report, which helps monitor enterprise compliance with security standards by documenting the security status of assets entering and exiting Redemtech facilities.
