L & S Recycling will go before the Hazelton, Pa., Planning Commission Jan. 19th over the possibility of building a scrap metal recycling facility in the parking lot of a closed facility.
The Planning Commission already has postponed the meeting two times.
Following the meeting on Wednesday, the company will go before the zoning board. Presently, the site where L & S is looking to open the facility is zoned industrial. However, a group of opponents to the scrap yard are seeking to have the zoning changed at the site. There is expected to be a zoning meeting on the site held Jan. 27th.
According to a spokeswoman for the city, if the company receives the go-ahead for the yard it will have to install a new fence, as well as test to ensure that the parking lot can hold much heavier equipment that will be used on the site. The proposed scrap yard will have torches, scales and cranes on site. Additionally, there is a railroad running next to the site, and the yard is expected to see about using rail to move some of the scrap metal that will be processed on site.
Another area of concern for some residents is the potential noise that will emanate from the site.
