Recycled Board Production Up YTD

Monthly reports shows strengthening market for recycled paperboard.

The production of recycled paperboard posted a modest 0.6 percent improvement from figures the same time last year. For June, production stands at 1.357 million tons, pushing the six-month production total to 7.83 million tons, compared to last year’s six-month total of 7.787 million tons.

While recycled board production improved, total paperboard production posted a slightly stronger 1 percent improvement from figures the same time last year.

The sharpest gain came in the production of recycled linerboard. For June, production stands at 331,000 tons, pushing the six-month figure up 4.4 percent from figures the same time last year.

During the same time, total linerboard production increased by a much slimmer 1.9 percent.

Recycled corrugated medium also posted improved production total  for the month and year to date. For June, production of the grade stands at 363,000 tons, pushing the six-month total to a figure 1.4 percent greater than figures the same time last year.

While the figure is up from last year, total medium production increased by a much sharper 3 percent between last year and this year.

The final component of the recycled board segment, boxboard, posted a decline between last year and this year. For June, production stands at 230,000 metric tons, bringing the six-month total to a figure down 0.2 percent from last year’s production total.

While production of the grade showed a slight decline, the figure is down much less than overall boxboard production, which dropped by 1.9 percent between last year and this year.
