The production of recycled paperboard stands at 1.354 million tons for May, pushing the five-month total to 6.474 million tons, a 0.6 percent drop from figures the same time last year.
According to statistics provided by the American Forest and Paper Association, a trade association covering the forest products industry, while the total production figure was down only slightly, it was down more than total paperboard production, which declined by 0.1 percent during the first five months of the year.
The production of recycled linerboard for May stands at 368,000 tons. For the first five months of the year production is up 3 percent between last year and this year.
Meanwhile, total linerboard production declined by 0.3 percent for the first five months of the year. The production level, on an annual rate, year to date, stands at 19.906 million tons.
Recycled corrugated medium production posted a decline between last year and this year. For this May, recycled medium production stands at 368,000 tons, pushing the annual rate, year to date, to 4.088 million tons. The production of recycled corrugated medium the first five months is down a slight 0.3 percent from last year.
The decline comes while total corrugated medium production increased by 1.5 percent over the first five months of the year.
The final component of the recycled board industry, recycled boxboard, posted a 1.5 percent drop between last year’s first five months and this year’s first five months. For May, the most recently reported month, production of recycled boxboard stands at 218 million tons, pushing the annual rate, year to date, to 2.599 million tons.
During the first five months total boxboard production dropped a sharper 2 percent from last year.
