The city of Houston has announced a partnership with RecycleBank to boost the collection and recycling of materials through the city. The program allows residents to accrue points through recovering various recyclables that can be used to purchase goods and services from a range of companies. With the program, RecycleBank measures the amount of material recycled and converts the amounts into RecycleBank points that can be redeemed.
The program relies on single-stream programs to boost recovery levels in various cities.
The first phase of the RecycleBank program is sponsored in part by Alcoa and Texas Instruments.
“The City of Houston is proud to announce its partnership with RecycleBank and the expansion of our green cart, single-stream recycling program to 22,000 households,” said Harry Hayes, director of Houston Solid Waste Management Department. “Partnering with RecycleBank will both increase recycling and reduce the amount of material going to the landfill.”
Houston residents begin receiving rewards for recycling on Monday, Nov. 9, 2009.
