RecycleBank, with U.S. headquarters in New York City, has announced that it continues to grow its business by partnering in a program with the online retail firm eBay.
The eBay collaboration takes the RecycleBank program beyond curbside recycling and brings consumers online, offering 50 RecycleBank points for joining eBay’s Green Team community, according to a company news release. The community encourages consumers to commit to using what presently exists. Additionally, RecycleBank members will soon be able to use their RecycleBank points for discounts on eBay purchases.
“Our relationship extends the power of eBay and the eBay Green Team to reward the greener actions that more and more consumers are taking every day,” says Amy Skoczlas Cole, director of the eBay Green Team. “Thousands of eBay sellers have built successful businesses by recycling, re-using and re-selling products that already exist and may otherwise have ended up in landfills. Our relationship with RecycleBank offers an innovative way to encourage and reward green-conscious consumers who are looking for more sustainable ways to shop.”
In related news, RecycleBank and Allied Waste have announced that they have landed the program in Helena, Ala., the first city in the state to use the recycling incentive program.
Through the program, offered by Allied Waste Services of Birmingham, Helena residents will receive valuable rewards for recycling with RecycleBank. Allied Waste expects to have 10,000 households enrolled in the program by this summer and possibly expand throughout Shelby County.
Allied Waste, a Republic Services Group company, has established partnerships with RecycleBank in a number of cities, including metropolitan Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn.; Cleveland; and western Massachusetts.
In December, Allied Waste distributed 95-gallon recycling carts to city residents and began picking up recyclables last month.

Starting Feb. 3, Allied Waste trucks will read the identification tags during recycling pick up and record the weight of recyclables. RecycleBank will convert that weight into points that can be used at hundreds of businesses.
The new program also brings with it single-stream recycling. Allied Waste accepts plastics 1-3, plastic milk and detergent jugs, steel and aluminum cans, newspaper, cardboard, boxes and paper products.
