Mobile Communications Inc. (MobileCom), one of the largest Cingular Wireless authorized agents in the United States, and ReCellular Inc., a collector, reseller and recycler of used wireless handsets and accessories, has announced a new cell phone recycling program.
All 36 of MobileCom’s Cingular Wireless retail locations in Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina and Florida will participate in the recycling program. MobileCom’s recycling program offers a 50 percent discount on all cell phone accessories for individuals or organizations making a donation.
Additionally, a portion of the proceeds from MobileCom’s recycling efforts will be donated to the March of Dimes in support of that organization’s programs to prevent birth defects and infant mortality.
“Mobile Communications is pleased to make this worthwhile and environmentally responsible recycling alternative available to our many customers and neighbors,” Paul Ray, vice president of sales for Mobile Communications, says. “Individuals, groups or organizations are all welcome to make a donation of old or unused phones in any quantity, regardless of make, model, age or condition.”
“As a leader in responsible cell phone refurbishing and recycling, ReCellular is proud to help Mobile Communications in its new effort,” Charles Newman, president and CEO of ReCellular, says. “Our programs ensure that phones are reused in the most beneficial ways possible.”
Roughly 75 percent of the cell phones ReCellular collects are refurbished to near-new condition or otherwise processed for resale. Rebuilt phones are packaged and marketed to users in developing nations of the world where new phones are cost-prohibitive. Products that cannot be rebuilt are disassembled and responsibly recycled. Recellular says that no environmental waste goes to landfills, either directly or through intermediaries, making the process highly effective in reducing or eliminating solid waste.
