Recycling and Disposal Solutions (RDS), based in Virginia Beach, Virginia, has opened its material recovery facility (MRF) in Greenville, North Carolina, where it will process material for Pitt County.
RDS purchased the MRF in September 2023 from Eastern Carolina Vocational Center (ECVC), which had operated the facility for nearly 30 years, and has spent the last year-plus upgrading the site, including installing an advanced sorting system from Louisville, Colorado-based Amp.
The MRF features an Amp One system powered by Amp’s artificial intelligence- (AI-) enabled sortation technology to process approximately 10,000 tons of single-stream and commercial material annually.

“AI technology will enhance the processing of materials for a better product by recovering more material and removing more contamination,” Pitt County Solid Waste and Recycling Director John Demary says.
The MRF officially began processing material June 30 and serves 14 towns and cities in Pitt County as well as surrounding municipalities, including Greenville, Ayden, Bethel, Falkland, Fountain, Grifton, Grimesland, Winterville and the village of Simpson.
According to RDS, when ECVC managed the site, it was equipped with modern technologies, and the company says it will continue this growth by installing and utilizing robotics in tandem with AI and its employees to process recyclables at an increased rate.

“We are like family here [and] we know the operation very well,” scale operator Tonya Harris says on the RDS website. “We work hard to keep this place going and we also take pride in our work ethics. We strive daily to make sure the Greenville plant continues to be successful.”
