Indiana Scrap Recycler Relocating Planned Auto Shredder

New location has rail spur on site.

Randy’s Recycling, an Eau Claire, Mich.-based recycling firm, has decided to relocate the location of its first auto shredder from South Bend, Ind., to nearby Carlyle, Ind. The company had neared a decision to build its auto shredder in South Bend where it had an existing scrap metal operation. However, the company, which was facing growing opposition to the proposed site, decided to relocate its operation to the nearby city of Carlyle, Ind. The new site is still in the same county as South Bend, although there are features to the new location that exceed those possible with the South Bend site.

Randy Schlipp, president of the company, says that the new location has received preliminary approval from both local and county officials. The region’s Area Plan Commission voted unanimously to send the rezoning petition to the St. Joseph County Council with a favorable recommendation.

A key feature of the new site is having a rail spur on site. Further, the Carlyle site is in an area zoned for heavy manufacturing. The shredder site will be situated on roughly 25 acres.

Schlipp says that plans call for the company to break ground on the auto shredder, an American Pulverize 81/104, by March, 2011, with the shredder starting by the third quarter of 2011. Along with the auto shredder, the site will include an eddy current separator that will allow it to extract more recyclable metal from the residue.

Schlipp says that the company also recently opened its third recycling yard, called Going Green Recycling, in Cicero, Ind. The 10-acre site will be used as a feeder yard for the auto shredder. In addition to the Cicero facility, Randy’s Recycling operates a scrap metal and auto recycling facility in South Bend and Eau Claire, Mich.
