Eco Entreprises Quebec to invest $40M in glass recycling

Nonprofit seeks to modernize recycling centers.

According to a report from the Canadian Broadcasting Co. (CBC), nonprofit Éco Entreprises Québec plans to invest $40 million over five years to modernize glass recycling in the province.

Éco Entreprises Québec represents more than 3,000 companies that produce containers, packaging and printed materials in Quebec. Its members contribute $135 million annually to compensate for municipal curbside recycling services, the CBC reports.

“We’ve been analyzing this situation for the past years, and we came to the conclusion that the best to have good recycling of glass material in Quebec is to modernize our sorting centers and to work on the market outlets for glass,” Maryse Vermette, CEO of Éco Entreprises Québec, is quoted as saying in the CBC article.

However, the Quebec government is considering a bottle-deposit system that is at odds with the nonprofit’s plans, according to the report. Environmental activists support the deposit system.

The CBC report says much of the glass collected in the province is being thrown out after the 2013 closure of the Longueuil, Quebec, facility that prepared about 70 percent of the province’s glass for recycling.
